LCHS Curatorial Assistant Internship Description

The intern will work independently and with the curator to assist in identifying, cataloging, researching, and processing material for potential acquisition and items already accessioned.

Hours: 10-12 hours per week, unpaid.

Ideal Degrees: History, museum studies, anthropology, archaeology, library science, communication, art history, or related degrees.

Student qualifications:

· Interest in history and material culture

· Ability to work well independently and in a team setting

· Attention to detail

· Strong research and writing skills

· Strong computer or database skills

· Strong oral communication skills

· Ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects

Student responsibilities: Identification, Cataloging, and Processing

· Inspect and research incoming and accessioned objects

· Consult internal documents to determine accessioning status

· Create acquisition and catalog records for unprocessed objects

· Add data to accessioned object records

· Scan and/or photograph collection materials

· Write at least one Things that Matter article

Knowledge intern is expected to gain:

· Experience working in a professional museum setting

· Specialized training in LCHS collections cataloging and PastPerfect.

· Knowledge of collection acquisition process and museum standards and best practices

· Training and experience in the careful handling of fragile historic objects
