Downton Day Revisited!

By Peggy Derrick

On Saturday, March 14, la Crosse County Historical Society and the La Crosse Public Library joined forces to present "Downton Day," La Crosse's first Downton Abbey-themed event.

Presenters from both organizations shared information about life in La Crosse in the same historic period, the early 20th century. Afterwards attendees were treated to a "Downton Fair," with English tea and chef-made treats.

Clothing of the era, from the LCHS collection, was on display and Hixon House docents displayed a fancy table setting from Hixon House and gave pointers on how to set a formal table. Milliner Deb Olson was there with a fabulous display of period hats. And, there was a fashion show and contest! Participants who came in costume were introduced by MC and library director Kelly Krieg-Sigman, and all were heartily applauded. The winner? The gentleman in the elegant tux and white tie!
