Today, all seven of the steamboats that were in the GRand Excursion are gone. But of the seven, perhaps the best known in the years following the excursion and remembered today is the War Eagle. In an age when the average life span of a steamboat was 5 years or less, the War Eagle was in service for 16 years. The final resting place of the War Eagle is in the Black River at La Crosse.
