Donating To Our Collections

La Crosse County Historical Society maintains a collection of artifacts that pertain to the history of the region. Most of these were donated by individuals.

We cannot accept everything offered, because not everything is appropriate, and because it is expensive to care for and provide access to collection items. Each item is different, but factors we consider include the item's historical or cultural significance for La Crosse County, physical condition, whether or not LCHS already owns a similar item, and the item’s ownership and use history. Potential additions to the collection go through a rigorous review process and are subject to a vote by the Society’s Collections Committee.

If you are interested in donating items, please call and speak to the curator at 608-782-1980

Drop offs will not be accepted: we do not have staff available to handle unsolicited donations.  LCHS reserves the right to dispose of any unsolicited materials delivered to one of its sites.

Appraisals and Valuations

Because of its standing with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as an interested party, La Crosse County Historical Society cannot appraise or assign a monetary value to items. Those looking for appraisal services may wish to consult their local yellow pages or contact one of the following organizations for a referral:

Photographs and Documents

LCHS collections are primarily objects, or artifacts. Documents and photographs are only saved by us as supplementary documentation that accompanies artifacts. The Archives Department in the La Crosse Public Library is the correct repository for photos and documents that relate to local history. Information about making a donation to the Public Library Archives is available at 608-789-7136.
